Tending the Fire, Not Burning Out: Building Teacher Social Emotional Competence

Session 2
Erin Franzinger Barrett — Chicago Public Schools

My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends— It gives a lovely light! (Edna St. Vincent Millay, 1918)

Teaching is hard work. You plan, you professionally develop, you reflect, you coach, you dish out love and support to tiny (or not so tiny) humans every day. Do you find yourself short on time for the whole self care thing? Come hang out to grab some new and some familiar tools for your own self care and take the time to really practice them. We'll work together to figure out plans for you to take home for your life as well as for your classrooms and educational settings.

Conversational Practice

Folks will share ideas verbally (shoulder share, group discussions) and nonverbally (Boom!, positivity chain, thumb check). Oh lord would I hate standing in front of a room for an hour and babbling. We should have lots of interaction and play in this session.

Hey Edupals! Getting ready the agenda for tomorrow. Activities will include gentle yoga movement, movement throughout the room, group and partner sharing, verbal and nonverbal communication, writing/drawing, and music. I will recommend possible accommodations to allow accessibility. If you anticipate needing individualized accommodations for any of these activities, or would like more info before making a decision or request, please let me know here in the comments, on Twitter @eefranz, by email at efranzinger@gmail.com, or when we get to the session!
